What is a News Photograph?
The
best news photographs:
Have
currency, action, and emotion.
An
event has currency if it breaks the normal flow of information.
Events that previously took place can become news
again if there is a fresh angle or new information.
Have impact.
The more people affected, the more news worthy the
photograph will be.
Will the effect of the event being photographed be
felt locally, nationally or internationally? The more unique or surprising the
event the more likely it is new worthy.
Have relevance.
News is relevant when the issues or event being
covered is germane to the audience.
News should advance the audienceÕs understanding
of what is happening around them, and help them make informed decisions about
their lives.
News
photographs are NOT:
Photo
opportunities set up by public relations people.
Ever
posed.
Used
to promote an event, particularly a for-profit event, i.e. advertising.
Social or entertainment events.
